Interrail vs individual train tickets: how to choose

The best European rail ticket is the one that fits your actual itinerary. Start with your journey, then compare the options.

Sketch your route first

Write down your intended travel days, destinations and likely trains. A multi-country trip with frequent travel has different needs from a return city break. Compare the total cost of individual tickets with the relevant rail pass, including any reservation charges.

A pass does not always reserve a seat

Interrail explains that some trains require an additional seat reservation, which is not included in the pass price. Check the requirement for each planned service before purchasing a pass, especially if a particular train is essential to your trip.

Check the rules that apply to you

Check pass eligibility, country-of-residence restrictions, travel-day rules and refund conditions with the provider. Availability and flexibility are worth considering alongside cost. Do not assume a pass guarantees a place on every departure.

Check before you travel

Route inspiration is not a live timetable or fare quote. Check current availability, ticket conditions, engineering works and assistance arrangements for your travel date.
